Do you remember the sunscreen of your younger years? Growing up near the beach meant that not only were we lucky enough to make afternoon trips, we also had to invest in LOTS of sunscreen! Over the years, I remember greasy, uncomfortable sunscreen lotions that didn't do a great job of protecting my skin from the sun. They were also hard to rub in, had to be reapplied several times, and of course, as kids, we didn't think about the harmful effects of ingredients in those products like we do today. 

Without proper sun care, one can end up burned like a lobster, which, well, is just not good for anyone. Not only does it sting, burn, and cause skin to eventually peel, it can also create skin cancer. My most famous sunburn story was related to a birthday outing on the Chesapeake Bay via a boat tour. I had put on spray sunscreen, reapplied several times, but to no avail, I was burned. The spray of the water, the strength of the sun, and the wind caused conditions that made me Sebastian the Crab red for over a week! After that, I vowed to keep up with my sunscreen use and find proper sunscreen with great coverage. 

Fast-Forward to 2022 and I still need a great sunscreen that cares for my skin, protects me from the harmful UV Rays that our wonderful sun provides, and like to have products that I know will be good for the kiddos in my life. 

Last week at summer camp, I had the awesome opportunity to try out Mustela. Mustela is a skincare company that creates their products to be safe for use by babies, moms, and the entire family. This French-family owned company has existed for 70 years. Mustela is committed to creating products that are natural and as respectful to the environment and humans as much as possible. 

Even though my summer camp was located in the mountains, it will still hot and sunny. For pool days, hiking days, and just sitting in rocking chairs on sunny afternoons, this sunscreen was a great skin protector. Mustela Mineral Sunscreen is 93% made with natural ingredients and is fragrance free. 

The SPF 50 is strong enough for anyone in the family and is safe to use on the face as well as the rest of the body. SPF 50 is available as a lotion, spray, and stick. SPF 30 is available as a spray. 

Not only is the sunscreen effective, but it's also hydrating! Some sunscreens automatically are dry, but not this one. To use, apply liberally. It comes out white, so it's easy to see where you have missed spots. Don't forget to apply at least 15 mins before sun exposure. 

Like all sunscreens, Mustela is water-resistant (for 80 mins) and should be reapplied every 2 hours or after towel-drying. I didn't go into the camp pool, but I can say that this sunscreen held up through daily heat and sweat. 

This sunscreen doesn't have that icky smell that a lot of brands do, it's smooth and didn't feel greasy at all. In fact, when I first put it on, I thought how it felt cool and refreshing without the added greasy weight other brands contain. I didn't try out the sprays yet, as I focused on lotion, which was thick enough but gentle enough to do its job. 

The sprays would be great if you are short on time, but still need sun protection. Just remember if you are in wind, that you need to make sure it's properly applied, so you don't get burned. In fact, most of the time, I try to put on sunscreen before adventuring out into the sun. It gives it time to set it and do its job, and I don't have to worry about it once I arrive to my destination! 

There are still many summer days left to hang out by the pool, head to the beach/ lake front, or be in your own backyard, so make sure to have Mustla nearby to keep all ages in your family safe! The family size Mustela sunscreen will be perfect to make it through the remainder of our summer days (and even when school begins, cause after all, it's hot and sunny through October in most of the South!)
