Countdown to Christmas: Last Minute Everything!

This morning, I woke up in a cold sweat, with a racing heart around 5:15. I forgot to do something... but what? I tossed and turned and tried to go back to sleep, but the thing I forgot to do was weighing on my mind... I just couldn't remember what that thing was! Was it important? Must have been, or I would have still been asleep when my alarm eventually sounded thirty minutes later. Ah- the elf! I completely forgot to move the elf! If my kids woke up and found their elf unmoved, without some sort of treat in its bag, they would be devastated. My 9-year-old is an early riser, so I sprung out of bed, feet hitting the cold hardwoods floors of my home, and I raced to the living room to wrap the elf in a string of battery-operated LED lights, shove him (and them) into the Christmas tree, and jam two pieces of wrapped chocolates into his treat bag about five minutes before my son woke up. Whew!

I calmly made my way to the armchair to enjoy a cup of hot coffee, and stare at the tree for a few minutes, and then my mind started racing again.

I won't go shopping today. I won't. I don't need to. Wait- did I remember to get stocking stuffers? Do I have enough tins to house all of the treats I stayed up making until 10 pm last night? Did I buy a gift for my friend? Are my day after Christmas plans set? Should I start laying clothes out for vacation now, or wait until later in the week? Are the Christmas Eve outfits clean and pressed? Did I forget anything at the grocery store? How many presents are still left to wrap? What's on my to-make/bake list for today?

My hubs will take the kiddos to his grandparents' house for a while this morning. He'll be using their large kitchen counter as a workspace for making his annual cinnamon rolls for Christmas morning. For the two or three hours that they are out of the house, I'll be answering e-mails, making plans for vacation, wrapping those last-minute gifts, making peanut butter balls, packing gift tins full of goodies, making spanakopita for Christmas Day, cleaning the house, and doing whatever else I can think of that possibly needs to be done before tomorrow and Wednesday. Time is running out, and while I pride myself on being organized, it seems as though there is still so much left to do.

In an effort to not completely lose my mind today, I'll be jamming to Christmas music while I work, and streaming a couple of feel-good holiday movies while I wrap. Coffee until noon, hot cocoa in the afternoon, and I've already got my wine ready for this evening. It's going to be a long day!

What's left on your holiday to-do list? We're down to the wire, and I'd love to hear from you!
