1. When you want to lose weight, your body has work to do as it burns the fat that you have accumulated. In order to do that, it needs energy in the form of nutrients. Look for nutrient-rich foods and make sure that you are eating plenty of them. Vegetables in abundance, not too much fruit as it does have a sugar content, add protein to every meal, not necessarily in the form of meat, eggs are good protein as are seeds, nuts, and beans. Try to cook using natural ingredients and avoid the use of processed foods which are often lacking in nutrition and high in salt and sugar.

2. It is important to keep your metabolism working. Some people think that when they diet, they have to starve to lose weight and yes, weight is lost but usually the weight loss is not sustained when the person resumes their regular diet. This is because their metabolic processes slow down to accommodate the lack of food that is now passing through their system and when they resume a regular diet again, it takes time for the metabolic process to adapt. When dieting, therefore, it is important to eat regular meals which are nutritionally dense, avoiding sugar and ‘bad’ fats. 4. Drink plenty of water. Your body is made from around  60% water and often when we feel hungry, we are actually thirsty. Don’t wait until a thirst develops, drink regular amounts of water throughout the day. Water is necessary so that you can maintain that balance of body fluid. Body fluid is required for digestion, absorption, the making of saliva, body temperature control and kidney function, to name but a few, so dehydration, even in a mild form can become a problem. Water will also help to energize your muscles and it is responsible for keeping the skin looking good. Before you go off to start drinking liters and liters of water, it is also important to remember that you can have too much of a good thing. Overhydration can cause electrolyte depletion and that should be avoided.

5. Exercise is all important, it is important to keep your body moving throughout the day. A sedentary lifestyle can cause the body to become sluggish and ineffective. There has been considerable research into exercise and what exercises are best, how often you should exercise and for how long. Exercise strengthens the heart and the lungs and the bones, it keeps your arteries and veins in good condition and helps prevent many of the serious illnesses. Remember that exercise does not have to be an hour’s long high-intensity gym session, walking is exercise and it is important that you decide what is best for you. If beginning exercise, it may be an idea to speak to your health physician if you have health issues and it is important not to do too much too soon as that can be detrimental rather than helpful. You do not want to begin exercise to the point of exhaustion, it should be a gradual process and it should be enjoyable. If you have a sedentary job, get up every so often and go for a short walk, stretch your body, move your arms. It is not a good idea to remain seated all day.

Exercise should be a part of a healthy diet and everyone should aim for about 30 minutes of exercise each day. It will also help you sleep better and if you exercise outside you will benefit from the fresh air too.
