How to Deal with Very Little Sleep as a New Parent

If you are a new parent then you will understand how exhausting the whole thing can be. After all, you may find that there are so many things for you to think about and you have someone who requires you to tend to their every need as well. If you want to try and help yourself then the best thing that you can do is make sure that you are getting enough sleep. If you aren’t getting enough sleep then this can make your day much harder and you may find that you are still very exhausted by the end of each night.

Pump Breast Milk Beforehand
If you want to sleep better at night then you do have to make sure that you pump your breastmilk as early as possible. When you do this, you can then get your partner to handle some of the night feeds for you. This isn’t for everyone but if you are able to share the load then this can help you out a lot in the future. This can also save you a lot of time and it gives your partner chance to bond with the baby at night as well. Of course, if you want to you can even rely on formula milk as well. A lot of people like to breastfeed as much as possible and this is completely understandable but you have to know that there is absolutely no harm in you using formula milk if the time comes down to it.

Power Snacks
You will be on disrupted sleep for quite some time and if you have more than one baby then this will certainly be the case. It is a good idea for you to have some power snacks for when you are up with the kids. Even something like a peanut butter sandwich can go a long way and the main reason for this is because it means that you are getting protein and carbohydrates at the same time. This can boost your energy levels and it will make you feel much better the first thing in the morning when normally you’d be so tired you can’t keep your eyes open.
Separate Rooms
It doesn’t matter whether you have gone through a surrogacy or whether you had your child naturally because you will probably be very low on energy all the time. This is completely normal, even if you weren’t the one carrying the baby. If this is the case then you may want to sleep in a separate room to your partner. This can be difficult at first but it means that the baby always has someone who can tend to their needs. Of course, it also means that one person can get up with the baby without disturbing the other and this can make all the difference to your sleeping pattern. Music
Every time your baby rolls over, you will probably know about it. Every single time they fuss, they will probably be woken up as well and this can cause you major problems. You may even find that you wake up when your baby doesn’t need you and this can cause you to lose out on sleep even more. Of course, one way for you to get around this would be for you to play some music very quietly in the room. When you do this, you may find that you sleep easier but it also means that you can easily still hear your child. A lot of people worry that when they play music in a room, that they are going to keep the child awake but this is not the case at all. Believe it or not, it is very easy for your child to sleep through noise and the main reason for this is because the womb is much noisier than you’d think. For this reason, if your baby wakes up during the night, it probably isn’t because of the music, it’s probably because they are ready for a feed or because they are needing a cuddle.
So there are many things that you can do to try and prepare for life as a new parent but when you are able to catch up on sleep, you will soon find that you are able to care for your child much easier and you may even find that you can have much more time in the day for yourself as well.
