Acts of Kindness Inspiration: Little Free Pantry

Image result for little food pantry

Happy Sunday! I have been on the hunt for a special service project that my moms LifeGroup can work on this fall. There are tons of wonderful ideas for serving others out there, but a couple of weeks ago, I saw a video about a woman who decided to put Little Free Pantries in and around her city. If you've seen the Little Free Libraries, they're similar to those.

A Little Free Pantry is a little house shaped wooden box on a post, with a glass door to protect the goods stored inside. Anyone can drop off non-perishable items to donate to the pantry, and anyone in need can take items from the pantry- day or night. There is no expectation, other than that of the community expectation to restock the pantry with items as it runs low.

I thought that this would be a wonderful project for my group to work on. I would love to see one of these in my own neighborhood. I live in the inner city, where poverty is much higher that other areas of my county. My own neighborhood is very mixed and in transition, with many friends and neighbors doing their part to turn the neighborhood around. Within the past 6 years we have lived here, I can say that it's improved so much.

Here a look at a featured news story about
the Little Free Pantry idea:

I love that folks can just drop off whatever they want to. I, for instance, have several packs of unopened diapers that I would love to donate. During August and September, it would be great to be able to add school supplies. The items can change seasonally, and there can be some staples items and toiletries left, as well. I would think of it as a huge blessing to the community, and would love to see them pop up all over town, as our local food pantry is always low on food.

Have you seen any Little Free Pantries in your community? Is this something you'd like to see in your own neighborhood? You can make it happen! I'll keep you updated on my group's progress & let you know how our project turned out.
