The Safest Swaddle for Baby: HALO SleepSack Swaddle

Thank you to HALO for providing me with product, free of charge, in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions shared are my own.

Part of the MBP Maternity & Newborn Guide

Being a mom of two is a totally different feeling from being mommy to just one little one. It's amazing to me how many things I am more relaxed about when it comes to Baby S than I was when it came to B, when he was a newborn. I know the difference is that I've done this before, however, there are still some major concerns around having a newborn that you just don't grow out of, no matter how seasoned you are as a parent.

One of the things that I still worry about and have even lost sleep over (already) is the possibility of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). SIDS occurs mostly in infants 2 months to one year in age, and can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as suffocation, overheating, etc. Hubby and I are super paranoid about SIDS, so we do everything in our power to keep ourselves educated and to be proactive about SIDS prevention to protect our precious daughter.

We know that there are many benefits to swaddling a newborn, however, my little wiggle worm can break free out of the best, tightest swaddle blanket on the market. She's so smart! It's unsafe for babies to sleep with loose blankets- if your baby is anything like mine, she'll kick free and then kick the blanket toward her head, which is so, so dangerous. The best way to put a baby to sleep is on their back, with no blankets or other items in their cribs or bassinets- but how to keep baby from getting cold, or what if you want to swaddle to soothe them? That's where HALO comes in with their amazing SleepSacks- the original wearable blanket.

The HALO Story...

founder Bill Schmid and his wife Cathy lost their first born to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).  From this tragedy, HALO® and its mission were born.  For more than 20 years we’ve been dedicated to putting the health, safety and well-being of babies first.  From our bestselling SleepSack® wearable blankets that help babies sleep safely, to our award-winning Bassinest™ Swivel Sleeper that lets you sleep safely next to your baby, to our ComfortLuxe® Sleepwear that helps little ones with sensitive skin sleep more comfortably, all we do comes from the core idea of putting babies first.

I was excited to receive the new HALO SleepSack Swaddle in cotton muslin.

I am a big fan of swaddling. It's so comforting and soothing to newborns. HALO SleepSacks are perfect for parents who want to swaddle, but don't want to risk swaddling with a traditional swaddling or receiving blanket. The HALO SleepSack Swaddle in cotton muslin is a wonderful choice for swaddling a newborn or an older baby. The design is beautiful- a pretty pink chevron pattern with a watercolor effect.

We live in NC, and this time of year, it's too warm in the evenings for the heat to come on, and too cool for the A/C to come on. It's just sort of still in the house. We try to keep our thermostat set at an optimum temperature for sleeping- around 68 degrees, though it's been suggested at 65 degrees is a good temperature for babies who are swaddled, to avoid overheating. The cotton muslin is lightweight and thin, but when bundled, keeps baby covered and warm.

Directions for swaddling are shown right on the back of the HALO SleepSack packaging.

I stink at swaddling with a blanket- I've always been amazed by how the hospital nurses get it just right every time. To me, the SleepSack is the best way to go. It provides 3 ways to swaddle- it's the only SleepSack that offers a three-way swaddle, that adjusts to your baby's sleep style.

Here's Baby S, modeling the Newborn HALO SleepSack in Cotton Muslin.

We swaddle S with her arms out. She hates to have her arms bound and will cry and cry until they're freed. Swaddling with the arms in can help reduce wake-ups from the infant startle reflex. S sleeps right next to our bed in her bassinet- with no blankets. We put her into a long sleeved onesie with fold overs on the hands, and then swaddle her in the HALO SleepSack when she's ready for bed. The HALO SleepSack can also be worn over regular sleepwear. This is a Newborn size, and she's so tiny, so it's a bit big on her right now, but she'll quickly grow into it. We have another one ready for her when she grows into the next size.

The HALO SleepSack helps S feel warm, safe and secure in her sleep, and it gives hubby and I peace of mind, knowing that she is as safe as possible while she sleeps. Nighttime diaper changes are a breeze with the HALO SleepSack on, as it unzips from the bottom. This means we can access the diaper area without having to fully unzip the entire SleepSack or taking it off completely. This makes for faster diaper changes, and a happier baby!

Features of the HALO SleepSack in Cotton Muslin

The HALO® SleepSack® Swaddle replaces loose blankets in the crib that can cover your baby’s face and interfere with breathing. In addition to helping your baby sleep safer, it helps him sleep better, too. Its adjustable swaddle wrap immobilizes your baby's arms to prevent the "Moro" or startle reflex.  And, it is the only 3-way adjustable swaddle that adjusts to your baby’s sleep style.  Swaddle arms in, hands-to-face, one or both arms out to ensure baby’s best sleep and an easy and gentle transition to the SleepSack® wearable blanket when it is time to stop swaddling. Used in hospital nurseries nationwide, the Halo SleepSack Swaddle is the #1 choice of hospitals and is recognized as "Hip Healthy" by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. Its strong adjustable fasteners ensure a perfect fit and resist breakouts for more secure swaddling.  Plus, its innovative zipper, unzips from the bottom allowing your baby to stay swaddled for easy diaper changes.

I love that we can swaddle S three different ways with the HALO SleepSack. Best of all, it keeps her safe and decreases the risk of SIDS. There's even a gentle reminder embroidered on the front of the SleepSack, which reads, 'Back is best.'
