We're finally getting back into the swing of things around here. After B's Christmas break from school, and him missing his first two days back to school (due to our vacation), I worried that going back to the classroom and getting back into our normal routine would be a struggle for him, and for me. To my surprise, he couldn't wait to go back to school, and went right back to the 'school night routine' with no problem. 

One of our favorite times of day, is bedtime- and not for the obvious reasons. This is a special time of day for me and B, because we get to crawl into his bed, snuggle, and read together. It's a nice, cozy, quiet time. We usually select one book with sight words that B can read to me, and then we select a storybook that we can read together.

I was recently approached by Little Bee Books, and offered the opportunity to check out one of their latest book releases, Stanley the Sock Monster Goes to the Moon, by Jedda Robbard. We are a children’s book publisher dedicated to making creative and fun books for busy little bees ages 0-12, based in NYC, and distributed by Simon & Shuster. 

We were thrilled to receive a copy of this hardcover picture book for children, ages 4+.

B is always excited when we have a new book to read before bedtime. He couldn't wait to meet Stanley and read about how this adorable little sock monster made his way to the moon!

Written and illustrated by Melbourne-based Jedda Robaard, Stanley the Sock Monster Goes to the Moon is about little monster Stanley, and his wish to go to the moon. When Stanley’s Dad tells him that he can do anything he sets his mind to, Stanley decides to go for it and tries different ways to reach his goal.

As soon as we opened up the book, we were in love with the whimsical illustrations. What young child doesn't wonder what space might be like?

As the story began, we were introduced to Stanley, an adorable little sock monster, and his sweet, caring, and encouraging dad. Stanley has a big goal- to get to the moon, and his dad tells him that he can do anything he sets his mind to.

Stanley is determined to go to the moon, so he maps out a bunch of plans, and begins asking his friends a lot of questions, and even tries to hitch a ride on a shooting star (if only Stanley could catch one!). We enjoyed reading the part of the story where Stanley approaches the Cow that Jumped Over the Moon, and then asks the little mouse what the moon might be made of (Cheese, of course!)? Stanley stuck it out, worked hard, and eventually, his persistence paid off big time, as he did indeed make it to the moon!

'Woooooossshhh! Off he went!'

We were so excited for Stanley when he made it to the moon, with the rocket he built all by himself! Stanley excitedly shared with his dad, that he did make it to the moon, and that is was the best thing ever. The wonderful dad that he is, Stanley's dad praised his efforts and accomplishment, and reminded him once more that when we follow our dreams, we can do anything!

Stanley the Sock Monster Goes to the Moon is a heartwarming, inspiring story that children (and adults) of all ages will be able to relate to, and enjoy. Its positive messages are fuel for today, and the future, as well. 'Never give up' is a phrase we think about, but don't say to one another or our children often enough. This positive story is one to read and enjoy over and over again, and has quickly become one of our family's favorites.
