In today's world, most families are running in a million different directions, all at once, and it can become pretty difficult to keep everyone's schedules straight. When my husband's grandparents did a bit of home remodeling a few years ago, they added a chalk wall to a small strip of wall in their laundry/mud room. I remember thinking it was the neatest thing in the world- just to have a place to write little notes, create a family calendar or schedule, write a grocery list, etc.
When we moved back to NC from MD in 2010, I was pregnant with Balian, and we were getting back into the swing of things in the community. After Balian was born, for some reason, we decided to take on even more responsibilities, join more teams and committees, and volunteer a bit more, too- all while juggling work, the household, and oh yeah- being new parents. In recent months, I have been itching to paint a strip of the wall in our kitchen with chalk paint- but we're renters, so we need non-damaging, temporary solutions to our household needs. Lucky for me, Denise Black, Independent Demonstrator with Uppercase Living, sent me a big sanity-saving product!

Denise knew that I was an overly busy work at home mom. We connected and became friends on Facebook about a year ago, and I have been following her gorgeous Uppercase Living photos/ideas ever since. Denise was kind enough to order an Uppercase Living Chalk Wall Calendar for me to review. I got to select the color for the vinyl that sits over the actual chalk calendar, so I selected a color that would match my kitchen decor- sort of an olive green. I also got to select the color of the chalk pen (well, I let my husband choose it) that we would be using to jot down our notes, etc.

The chalk wall calendar shipped out to my home so quickly after I sent my selections to Denise! The day that my package from UL arrived, I could not wait to unroll the calendar, and place it on my kitchen wall! I had just the perfect spot for it- near our back door, and wanted to be able to use it, right away! I waited until my husband and son were out of the house for a few hours, and went right to work, applying my UL chalk wall calendar to my kitchen wall.
I started by unrolling the kit from Uppercase Living. I received the actual chalk wall calendar, the vinyl overlay, instructions, chalk, and a chalk pen.

To start the process, I made sure to follow the directions and cleaned my surface (the kitchen wall), and allowed it to thoroughly dry. I then peeled the chalk wall calendar vinyl piece off of the backing paper, and placed it on the wall, in the desired location.
Ta-da! Instant chalk wall!
Next, I carefully removed the backing paper from the green vinyl overlay. I followed the directions, and used the handy little arrows to line everything up, and I placed the overlay on top of the chalk wall calendar, and smoothed over it with my hand.

I used the arrows to get the placement of the overlaying vinyl as straight as possible.
Once I was pleased with the placement of the vinyl, I used the small smoothing tool to rub over the vinyl, as I slowly peeled the paper off. A couple of spots got hung up, but because I followed directions, and went about the application slowly, I was able to help the vinyl cling to the chalk wall calendar with a gentle rub over, using the smoothing tool.
About ten minutes later, I ended up with the finished product!
The application process was really easy- a lot easier than I expected, honestly. I wasted no time stepping back to admire our new family calendar, and I loaded it up with our schedule, too! It's super easy to write on, with the chalk, and easy to clean, as well. The chalk just wipes away with a wet paper towel or a damp cloth.

When my husband came home and saw the new addition to our kitchen, instead of rolling his eyes or making a comment (which I was expecting), he said, 'Oh- that'll probably really come in handy.' He was right. It is such a wonderful tool for our family. I've wised up, and since drawn a line to divide the calendar in half, so I can use it for two weeks at a time, which works really well for us.
Love how this simple addition both adds a decorative touch to our space, and helps to keep our family well organized!
Everyone who has seen this neat chalk wall calendar in our kitchen has loved it, and commented about it. It really helps us to stay organized, and I no longer have to beg my husband to jot his schedule down for me. He is happy to add his schedule to the family calendar, and we are all much happier because of it. I love that if and when we do have to move, I can simply peel this right off the wall, and shouldn't have to worry about any damage or peeled paint behind it.
