Once Upon a Party (Review & Giveaway)

Part of Balian's 2nd Birthday Bash

One upon a time, I wished for my son to have a very special 2nd birthday party. Sometimes, I feel like it takes a village to make these types of wishes come true. I'm a lucky momma, because I have had the opportunity to work with some truly amazing folks who craft each and every one of their products by hand. Having some handmade, personalized decor items to help us decorate for Balian's birthday, made it all the more special and memorable.

I was honored to be able to connect with Allison Dorethy. Allison is a true 'mompreneur', who makes custom party supplies. Allison is married to a soldier, and says that her son is the one who inspired her business. Allison and her family reside in Alaska, and decided to share her business with the world through opening an Etsy Shop called Once Upon a Party, back in December 2010.

I loved looking through Allison's cute designs, and I knew that she would be able to craft something very special for Balian's party. When we started talking, I was thinking about having Allison make a personalized birthday banner, but she surprised me, by offering my an entire party pack, to include a banner, a birthday boy hat, cupcake toppers, and two centerpieces!

Allison spent a weekend working on my items, and then shipped them off to me the following week. Everything was nicely packaged, and arrived safely. I couldn't wait to dig into the box to see what Allison had made for us!

All of our party supplies from Once Upon a Party were in this box. Look at the cuteness!

Of course, I pulled everything out of the box, because I wanted to take some pictures. I started with the birthday banner, which is actually a three piece banner! 'Happy Birthday Balian' was spelled out, each word its own smaller banner, so they could all be layered for the display. I thought that was a great idea- otherwise, the banner would have been way too long for a spot on the wall or the mantle.

I love these coordinating Cat in the Hat colors. Allison really nailed the party theme, here.

The paper banner features die-cut scalloped circles, with smaller circles in the middle, and paper letters. The circles are connected by ribbon.

Here's what the banner pieces looked like, laid out on my table...

Allison also sent us some matching Centerpieces, which are larger paper circles, adhered to long wooden rods. We had a hard time deciding where to use to them at the party, because the food tables ended up so jammed with goodies. If I'd been a true party planning diva, I would have filled two apothecary jars with red and blue candies, and then stuck one of these in each of those jars. Instead, we displayed these on the mantle, above the area where Balian opened his presents. It worked just as well, and everyone loved the centerpieces!

Aren't these fun? They look like giant lollipops!
I love the cute patterned paper that Allison used for these!

I was so excited that Allison decided to make us some custom cupcake toppers for the party, too! Again, they are smaller paper scalloped circles, with a cute patterned paper and a 'B' for Balian, or the number two displayed on each one. Allison made twelve cupcake toppers- six of each. They were so easy to just plunge into a cupcake for an instant decoration! This makes it much easier on busy parents!

And last, but not least, Allison made Balian a special paper Birthday Boy hat! I loved it! It was a red hat with white dots and a pom pom, and a thin elastic chin strap. I was afraid that he wouldn't want to wear it, but Balian actually kept the hat on longer than I expected him to.

Super duper cute Cat in the Hat themed Birthday Boy Hat, featuring paper cute outs, pom poms, ribbon, etc- all in coordinating party theme colors!

We had a great time putting up the birthday party decorations from Once Upon a Party for our guests to enjoy! I loved the banner, and it really tied everything together in the family room, where we all gathered to eat and watch Balian open up his many gifts! All of our guests were very impressed by all of the handmade decorations, and agreed that they certainly added that extra something special to the party!
