K5 Learning Review

K5 Learning is an online reading and math program for kids from kindergarten through fifth grade that promotes building reading, math, and study skills through independent study. It is very simple and easy to use for both setting up and using.

Check out the K5 Learning Intro Video to get started or sign up for a free two week trial here. Signing up is quick and easy and with the free two week trial, you can see if K5 Learning would be helpful for your child. If you decide to continue after your two week trial is over, an annual subscription is $199 for the first child, $129 for additional children or pay monthly for $25 for the first child, $15 for additional children.

After you have signed up, you will have both a parent and a child log-in. I set Beckett up with a very simple user name and password that he could remember on his own and set the password to be memorized. I also have my own separate log-in and have access to my own "Dashboard" (I will explain all that in a minute). Once you have signed all in, you will get a link to many different video and FAQs about K5 Learning. These videos were very helpful in showing me what to do and where to go to do them.

I then let K5 know that Beckett was ready to start his free assessments. This is an online assessment of 8 key reading and math skills. These assessments will then used to personalize a starting point for Beckett within the K5 Learning lessons. I had Beckett log-in to his account and start his assessments. I prepared him beforehand that these would be longer and could be difficult for him, and for him to just try his best. I will have to say his attention did wane towards the end of both assessments but he did say he enjoyed them.

4 Important Tips from K5 Learning about the Assessments
1. Don't help your child with the answers.
2. Some questions are supposed to be 'too hard'. That's how the assessment works.
3. Keep your child focused. Don't let your child start clicking through pages without trying his best.
4. Take a break anytime - just click on the 'x' in the right corner. The next time the student logs in, the assessment will automatically restart from where they left off.

Almost immediately after he had finished his assessments, I received a report on how he did. Here is the general report:

For reading,
Phonemic Awareness - High K
Phonics - Inter. K
Sight Words - Inter. K
Vocabulary - High K
Reading Comprehension - Early Grade 1

For math,
Numbers & Operations - Inter. K
Measurement - Early Grade 1
Geometry - Inter. K

I can also access a detailed report through my parent Dashboard page. This page is for me to be able to monitor his progress, see what has been completed, where he is still needing to work, and how long it has taken him. I can also add or subtract things in or out. I went ahead and let him start his lessons at the level he was assessed at, knowing they may be too easy for him. After watching him work on a few basic things, I felt he was not being challenged and he was ready to quit saying it was too easy. I quickly emailed the K5 support person from my Dashboard page and asked for Beckett to be changed to early Grade One on all levels.

Once again, very quickly my request was answered and B was ready to begin all his lessons at early Grade One. He was ready and eager to get re-started. Each K5 Lesson lets the child work independently and at their own pace and they have over over 3,000 lessons and activities. Each lesson is animated, interactive, and simple enough to do on their own and the progress is tracked and available in the parent Dashboard.

Once Beckett has logged in, he can choose any of the following lessons (information directly from the K5 Learning site)

K5 Reading
K5 Reading consists of over 1,500 online tutorials and activities. The program is based on instructional guidelines laid out by the National Reading Panel and on best practices employed by teachers and reading specialists. In use by thousands of US students, this award-winning kindergarten through grade 5 reading curriculum covers five key skill areas: phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Lessons are interactive and animated with fun ‘role model’ characters. Each lesson is broken into segments: an interactive tutorial, one or more practice segments and finally a quiz. Segments are typically about 5 minutes long, allowing for short but effective study sessions.

K5 Math
K5 Math is a comprehensive and award-winning math program including over 1,200 research-based online tutorials and activities. The curriculum covers numbers and operations (arithmetic from simple counting through fractions and beyond), measurement (including telling time and counting money), geometry, beginning algebra and data analysis.

K5 Math emphasizes teaching math in a tangible rather than an abstract way. The multimedia lessons use animated characters in real world scenarios to build connections between math and kids’ own experiences.

K5 Math Facts
K5 Math Facts is an adaptive program designed to help kids develop instant recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.

Students who don’t develop immediate recall of math facts spend their time on basic computations instead of learning higher order math skills. The average Grade 5 student only knows 32% of his multiplication tables.

Math facts are traditionally taught with flashcards, workbooks and computer drill programs, but these do not adapt to the needs of individual kids. K5 Math Facts records and analyses every response a child makes – including how fast he answers - to determine which facts need further practice. The K5 Math Fact Matrix displays the student’s progress on every single math fact. Mastery is achieved when the whole matrix is green.
K5 Spelling
K5 Spelling is an advanced online spelling and vocabulary program which improves students’ language skills one word at a time. It features: immediate feedback on each word spelled (correct spellings receive applause and misspellings receive hints on how to correct a mistake), the student always spells a word correctly before moving to the next word, automatic word generation based on the child’s grade level, past quizzes, and specific goals, words the student has misspelled in the past are repeated in future quizzes until spelled correctly multiple times.

We have a 150,000 word database with an optimized visual interface to help imprint proper spelling in the mind. Unlike many web sites, K5 Spelling never displays a misspelled word. K5 gives multiple clues to a word: sound files, sample sentences, definitions and pictures help children absorb a word’s full meaning before trying to spell it.

Beckett has spent more time on the Math lessons, because he enjoys Math more right now. I have been impressed with his interest and how willing he has been to play educational games on K5 versus other online gaming sites he normally wants too. Our free trial with K5 Learning is almost up, and while I will not be renewing my subscription right now, I will be putting it on B's Christmas Wish List. K5 is a very impressive site with research and education being top priority, I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for afterschool activities, enrichment, or addition to homeschool lessons.
