Disney's Frankenweenie (Movie Review)

Part of MBP's Halloween Spooktacular

*Spoiler Alert*

My hubby and I were lucky enough to be able to attend an advanced press screening of Disney's Frankenweenie earlier this week. We were treated to the best seats in the house, and complimentary Franenweenie 3D glasses! We are huge Tim Burton fans, so we had pretty high hopes and expectations, regarding his newest masterpiece.

About the movie...

From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” was filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D. The talented voice cast includes: Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder.

Presented by Disney, “Frankenweenie” is directed by Tim Burton, produced by Tim Burton and Allison Abbate, from a screenplay by John August, based on a screenplay by Lenny Ripps, based on an original idea by Tim Burton. “Frankenweenie” releases in U.S. theaters on October 5, 2012.

Our thoughts...

Sacha and I had a great time as we watched Frankenweenie together. I am fast becoming a fan of 3D movies- especially animated movies. From the very beginning of the film, we were in love with the music, by Danny Elfman. My husband is a musician, and a huge Elfman fan... he knew he could count on Elfman to deliver a fantasticly creepy, and exciting movie score, and he didn't disappoint!

We also love Tim Burton- he is so quirky, and different, and is definitely not afraid to push the weird envelope... and we happen to like that about him. Several Burton films are among our favorites, and we are pleased to add Frankenweenie to that list. We fell in love with the character of Victor from the get go, and I definitely had a soft spot for Sparky, through out the film. The entire cast of characters was brilliant, one of my favorites being Edgar, voiced by Atticus Shaffer, who was eerily creepy and goofy.

Frankenweenie covers every angle- love of family, love between a boy and his dog, friendship, menacing neighbors, and ultimately, a community that comes together after tragedy takes place. We loved the old horror movie references in the film, and the terrifying creatures of the night toward the end of the film.

This is an absolute must-see for the entire family. Super young children may be frightened by some of the 'monsters,' but there were a lot of little ones in the movie screening, and they seemed to be okay- I didn't hear any crying. There were lots of great moments in the film that the adults will enjoy, and of course, the kids are going to love this, because ultimately, it's for them!

Be sure to make plans to go see Frankenweenie with your family!

Frankenweenie is now in theaters!
