Getting Fit with Pilates

In an effort to get back to a healthy lifestyle, I am back to a regular exercise routine. I take daily walks with my toddler, but just walking isn't enough to strengthen, lengthen and tone the areas that need attention. So, with that said, I returned to a steady routine of Pilates. Now, before I became pregnant with Balian, I was super toned. By just doing Pilates for 20 minutes 5-6 days a week, I was lean, had the flattest tummy ever, and had really nice legs. I kept up with the Pilates for as long as it was safe during my pregnancy, and then switched back to light cardio.

After B was born, I was breastfeeding, and the weight was just slipping away so quickly that I felt like I didn't need to exercise beyond daily walks. Now, however, no more nursing, independent little boy, equals a little more sit down time for mommy, which means I do need the extra exercise. I love Pilates for lots of reasons- overall total body fitness, long, lean appearance, increased strength, energy, flexibility, helps with posture (a must for new moms!), etc. Check out this great list of Top 10 Reasons to Do Pilates, and read more about what Pilates is and can do for your body.

My yoga mat has seen better days, so I'm definitely in the market for a new one. I found an incredible selection of yoga mats at Millet Sports. I need a mat that is going to stay in place, whether I am using it on the hardwood floor, or on top of an area rug.

I could also use some new Pilates programs to follow. I like the ones that I have, but changing up the routine will help me stay interested and focused on my exercise! It'll also be a new challenge. I typically follow the same 20 minute routine every day, so this will help to increase my endurance and strength.

And of course, I need to make sure that I am wearing the right fitness clothing while doing Pilates. I need yoga pants or capris that are slim fitting- for movement, but also breathable, and comfortable. I also need a fitness top that will be comfortable and offer support where I need it!

I can't wait to get back into Pilates full time. This type of exercise has really changed my life- physically and mentally. It's a relaxing experience, and a great way to get fit, and unwind at the end of a long day.
