Food Lion (Review & Giveaway)

If there's one thing I really don't look forward to, it's going to the grocery store. I used to really enjoy making a weekly meal plan, making out my shopping list, and taking a leisurely stroll through the store, but the reality is that I'm a working mom, and the term 'leisurely' no longer exists. So, I need my trips to the store to be shorter, and that happens best when shopping in a clean, well-organized environment.

There are a few other things that I have to take into consideration, though, when determining where to do my grocery shopping. My husband and I are known for running from one store to the next, to make sure we get the best deals, but that becomes exhausting pretty quickly! I'm all for spending less money, but I'd rather do all of my shopping in one place!

Recently, I was lucky enough to be selected as an ambassador for Food Lion, a regional grocery store chain, which is actually based here where I live- in Salisbury, NC. I've shopped at Food Lion for many years, but in the past few, haven't been quite as loyal as I'd been in years past. I chose to shop elsewhere, mainly because their 'extra low prices' slogan no longer held true.

Food Lion has recently re-launched their brand, though. They have updated several of their stores, and they are once again slashing prices, and even reaching out with their 'My Essentials' brand of products. I was asked to check out Food Lion's new look and feel, and was given some great goodies to get me ready for my grocery store trip, and get me psyched about getting back into the kitchen, and making fresh, homemade meals for my family.

Our special box from Food Lion is here! We received: $150 Food Lion Gift Card, a wooden recipe box w/recipe cards, a wooden cutting board, a spatula, oven mitt, lion shaped cookie cutter, and a Food Lion re-useable shopping bag!

Receiving all of these wonderful items from Food Lion made me really excited to make a meal plan. I sat down and started making my plan, and was on such a roll that I ended up with a three week plan! Mommy win!

Food Lion is a great place to shop!

Later that same day, we took a family trip to the Food Lion nearest to our house. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted by friendly cashiers, who directed us to the MVP Savings coupon scanner. We scanned our Food Lion MVP card, and got two sheets of coupons, right in the store. As we made our way through the store, I was really impressed by the new look- everything is nice and bright, clean, and easy to find. Prices were clearly marked, and there was no confusion over anything.

Nice, fresh veggies and fruit! Couldn't beat the price on the peppers!

88 cents for My Essentials brand ketchup and mustard!

Lower prices? They're not kidding! The first deal we snagged at Food Lion, was on toilet paper, of all things. We saved about $3.50 on a big pack of name brand toilet paper, which we usually buy elsewhere! I loved walking through the fresh produce section- everything looked so crisp and fresh. We stocked up on grapes, a bag of granny smith apples (for $2.50!), lettuce, broccoli, peppers, and lots of other fresh fruits and veggies that we often don't buy, because they're usually way too expensive!

We definitely got our Lion's Share of meat at Food Lion!

Loved the prices on the steamer bags!

The meat section was super clean, and the prices were pretty fair, too. We were able to get a few packs of steaks, for great prices. We saved big time on a large pack of ground beef, and even chicken! I was even impressed that steamed frozen veggies were a pretty good price. I love to keep the microwavable rice on hand for Balian- he loves rice!

We did indulge a little bit, and get a few things that we don't normally buy- like Lunchables, Capri Sun Pouches, etc- those were really sort of little treat type things for Balian, which he was excited about.

Goodies for a sweet little boy...

As for staple items, like condiments, bread, cheese, animal cookies, milk, etc, we went with Food Lion's My Essentials brand. We were so excited to see milk under $3/gallon (Balian goes through about four gallons of whole milk a week!), that we bought two gallons on our trip! Food Lion even has an awesome milk program, where you can get a free gallon after you've purchased a certain amount of milk! You can bet we're taking advantage of that! All in all, after scanning our Food Lion MVP Card, at check-out time, we saved about $64.00 on our grocery bill!

Mommy's little helper- he's after that Capri Sun!

When we got home from the store, Balian couldn't wait to help us put the groceries away, and tear into the cookies (we hardly ever buy cookies!). We've enjoyed many, many great meals, courtesy of Food Lion. Since we received so many awesome recipes in our goodie box from Food Lion, we've been having a lot of fun making some of those dishes. My husband is a big fan of fettuccini alfredo with chicken and broccoli, so we followed the recipe for that, and felt like we were enjoying a 5-star restaurant dinner!

Major yum- fettuccini alfredo with steamed broccoli, grilled chicken, parmesan cheese, and Food Lion brand Texas Toast!

Here are some other great things we enjoyed from our Food Lion purchases...

We made tacos with some of the yummy Food Lion ground beef we bought...

I used fresh ingredients from Food Lion, and made a taco salad, for myself!

Balian has been gobbling up the granny smith apples from Food Lion...

...and the Lunchables with Capri Sun!

I am so pleased with our recent Food Lion shopping experience! We've been stopping in at Food Lion more often than usual, and receive the same, friendly greeting, and the same great savings each and every shopping trip! We've found that most of their prices really can't be beat, and it's a much nicer shopping experience than trying to fight our way in and out of the local superstore.

  16. My factors actually include availability in town, cleanliness, and quality of product. Plenty of times I've been in a store where the produce just looks awful- and that has included food lion. But ours recently had some changes and it looks good!
