I don't know about any of you, but our bed, which is supposed to sleep two, frequently has an extra body in it overnight. I can hear feet hit the floor in his room and a few seconds later those same feet are climbing into my bed. This body may be smallish, but it is mighty, full of kicks, twists, and flops.
We have tried a random number of things, carrying him back to bed, sleeping in his bed with him, offering rewards, offering punishment, everything has worked for a short time but quickly returns to the comfort of our bed. I know in my heart I don't mind it, he is only going to be little for so long, and he craves being snuggled up next to another warm body, on the other hand, not sleeping soundly can make for a crabby day for everyone.
We recently were presented with a product which is made for families like ours.
SleepBuddy is both the company name and the fabulous, inventive product. The SleepBuddy concept was developed by a former teacher and mom to 4. As parents, we learn that sleep is not always a guarantee, and Laura was creative enough to see that when her first child was struggling to stay in bed, he needed some extra motivation. Both Laura and her husband developed the SleepBuddy and between their following three children, added on to the concept to make it what it is today. Before our SleepBuddy package arrived, I really hyped it up to B that he would be getting an exciting "something" in the mail. I let him open the package by himself to discover what was inside.
Once he had opened the box, he was very curious as to what it could be.
Inside the SleepBuddy box, he believed he had found a nightlight, which is sort of true.
SleepBuddy is a whole sleep system, complete with a light, book, parent guide, and reward chart.
Step One: Introduce the SleepBuddy and read the included book, "A Bedtime Surprise", written by the SleepBuddy creator, Laura. The book was very short and informative, and easy for smaller children to understand.
Step Two: Program the light for nap and bedtime. I followed the parents guide and it was very simple to set up. I added a nap time, which we normally don't use, and a bedtime, you can choose to do any combination.
Step Three: Place the light so that it is visible in your child's bedroom. We put B's on the dresser directly in front of his bed and plugged it in. What are the Benefits of SleepBuddy?
Step Four: Discuss and review the rules of the SleepBuddy. Figure out a goal for the child to reach. Record child's progress on the included incentive sticker chart until the goal is reached. The incentive chart has 7 animals in 4 different color rows, after 7 stickers are placed, a reward can be given. How can SleepBuddy be Rewarded? He is not currently phased by a promise of a reward, to him it is more rewarding to sleep with us.
We have had our SleepBuddy for 4 weeks now and we are slowly working our way up the chart.
B is definitely aware of the SleepBuddy and I do have to say, seems to have helped us. He has had the best track record with SleepBuddy over any other method we have tried, so thumbs up to that! I know by him seeing the SleepBuddy when he wakes, he is getting that important reminder to make a choice and I know when he does get his incentive chart filled, he will be proud of his choices.
I love this "sleep positions" poster. I know we can relate to this at our house, can you?
If this fits your family, you should try SleepBuddy!
