Am I the Mother? Because apparently, I need to clarify my job description. I thought motherhood meant: Raise the child. Keep them alive.Teach them right from wrong.
Get them through childhood.Send them into the world.THE END.
Wrong.
Apparently, motherhood means:
“Did you eat?” “Are you home?” “Did you lock the door?” “Why haven't you answered my text?” “I'm not asking because I'm nosy. I'm asking because I gave birth to you and therefore require updates.”
My kids are grown now, but somehow my motherly instincts didn't get the memo. I still worry. I still give unsolicited advice. I still want to know where they're going, who they're with, and whether they've eaten something besides coffee and snacks.
Please don't even get me started on the phrase: “Mom, I know." Oh, you know? Fantastic. Then why am I still explaining it?
The funny thing is, motherhood changes as your children grow. When they were little, I was responsible for basically everything.
Now?
I'm responsible for worrying about everything I have absolutely no control over. It's an upgrade nobody asked for. I may not be packing lunches anymore, but I'll still ask if you've eaten. I may not be checking your homework, but I'll still question your life choices. I may not be tucking you into bed, but I'll still say, “Text me when you get home.”
And yes, you can roll your eyes.
I raised you. I've earned the right to be annoying.
So, am I the mother?
Yes.
And unfortunately for you… there is no retirement plan. No PTO. No sick days. And absolutely no quitting. Because once you're a mother, you're a mother for life.
Even when your babies become grown adults who apparently believe they can survive without your constant supervision.
Good luck with that.
Love,
Mom ❤️
