I think one falls in love in stages throughout their life.  People fall in love as kids and I call this puppy love.  Puppy love feels so real in the moment and it teaches you about yourself.  It teaches you what you want in a partner and what you are willing to compromise on to be with the one you love.

  You fall in love as an adult with the person you marry or choose to spend your life with.  You fall in love with the personality and heart that makes that person them.  Over time you fall in love with the little things they do such as holding your hand when you walk together or when they wrap their arms around you at night. 

That love evolves when you become a parent. You fall in love with your child because they are a reflection of you and the love you feel.
