Have you heard of tie-blankets? These no- sew fleece blankets are made by cutting fabric into strips, then tying knots. It is such an easy project that is great for all sorts of community and church ministries!
Our church youth and members are making these blankets throughout October. They will be sent to one of our ministry partners in Winston-Salem, NC. We spent time with this particular ministry on our summer service trip last June. Many of our youth couldn't go, weren't old enough yet, etc, so they are excited to do this easy service project!
As it starts to get cooler, you might see a need in your own community for tied-blankets. Whether it's for a local shelter, someone that you know lives on the street, or even for a neighbor in your community who hasn't been feeling well, it's such a great project that pretty much any age (ok, maybe your toddler might need lots of help to make knots) can finish.
Not only is this a great community service project, the blanket also makes a great gift! It's something usable, warm, and cozy!
What you need:
- a sturdy pair of fabric scissors (just add it to your next Target or Walmart order)
- a yardstick (ruler or tape measurer will do)
- fleece fabric (check out your local Hobby Lobby/ Michaels, but also look online)
- Two pieces of fleece, cut into 2.5 yards each (fabric stores will cut exactly to your needs, or you can order in bulk/ online and cut yourself)
- Cut 5 X 5 inch squares from each edge
- Cut each edge into one inch strips, five inches long
- Tie strips into a double-knot, making sure the bottom and top layers are tied together
- Voilà , you have a blanket!
