Why Is My Refrigerator Not Cooling: 5 Main Causes

Refrigerators are among the best things to ever happen to human beings. They bring with them a lot of convenience. You can stock your groceries and beverages in it. You can cook and store your meals for an entire month without any worry about food safety. However, since it is a mechanical item, it can develop issues that can affect this convenience.

One such issue is not cooling. This is one of the most common mechanical issues that refrigerators often develop. It could be caused by different factors, which we want to explore in this article. Thankfully, some of these causes can be discovered and resolved. Let's explore these causes.

  1. Installation location

While this may come as a surprise, where you install your refrigerator is crucial as it can affect how well your fridge will maintain its proper cooling temperatures. If your refrigerator is designed for indoor use, install it in the house where temperatures are less likely to rise or drop sharply.

Additionally, ensure that the refrigerator is installed with adequate clearance on the sides and the back of the fridge to allow proper air circulation. Refrigerators generally require half an inch clearance on the side and one inch in the back.

  1. Blocked vents

Another common reason your refrigerator is not cooling is that the vents might be blocked. There are various reasons the vents are getting blocked. It could be because food items are blocking them. Blocked vents can prevent cool air from filtering inside the appliance.

So you need to ensure that you organize food in your fridge in a way that ensures proper airflow and move any items that could be blocking the vents.

  1. Dirty condenser coils

Over time, your refrigerator may gather dirt, dust, and other particles on the condenser coils. These coils are located on the bottom or back of the fridge. If the coils are blocked, it makes it difficult for the heat from the refrigerator to be released and may put too much pressure on the compressor to work.

The best thing to do this is to clean your coils every 2-3 months, especially if the environment around your fridge is dusty or greasy or if pet traffic in your home is significant.

  1. Dirty or broken gasket seals

The door gasket seals might appear insignificant, but they are essential as they help lock cold air inside the fridge. If dirty, they may not function properly, causing your fridge to leak cool air.

It is advisable to periodically inspect your fridge's door gasket for crumbs, dirt, and other debris and clean them with warm, soapy water. If air continues to escape after cleaning your gaskets and the refrigerator is still not cooling, it would be ideal to contact a professional technician as soon as possible.

  1. Faulty circuit board

The circuit board is typically the brains of the fridge. It controls everything from powering individual parts to temperature regulation. So, if, after inspecting the previous causes, your fridge is still not cooling appropriately, then the issue could be a faulty circuit board. Hiring a professional to diagnose and repair the circuit board is best.
