Weekends with the Wigglesworths- Happy New Year's Eve!

Happy Saturday everyone! It's hard to believe that it is already the last day of 2016, even though, at times, it felt like the year was never going to end.

Happy New Year's Eve from Google!
Google Doodle for New Year's Eve 2016

Tonight, the Wigglesworth crew will be spending a quiet night at home. I made a meal plan through the middle of February, and tonight's dinner will be Lentil Soup. It's pretty good timing since I have  read lentils represent "good luck" for the new year.

I'm hoping that we all stay up late enough to watch the ball drop. In the past, the girls have stayed up until about 11, Matt falls asleep around that time, and I fight to stay awake so that I can kiss them all on their foreheads when the countdown is over and the New Year has begun!

Do you have any special New Year's Eve traditions? Be sure to share them in the comments section!

LDS Temple DC Festival of Lights

Every year the LDS Temple of Washington, DC hosts a very special holiday celebration, The Festival of Lights. This year was the 39th year of the festival but the first time we got to go as a family. We are not part of the LDS religion but they are welcoming to everyone and genuinely excited to have people visit. While there, we learned that setting up for the festival takes many months; They start decorating in July and it usually takes them until April to take the everything down.

Temple grounds glow with over 650,000 lights:

Christmas trees decorated in international themes:

Life-sized outdoor nativity:

Nightly performances in their beautiful theater:

And, my favorite part, exhibit of crèches from around the world:

We had an amazing time visiting the temple for the Festival of Lights! If you live near DC or plan to see family in that area in December, it's an excellent activity for people of all ages. The Festival is open every year December 1st- January 1st daily from 10 am to 10 pm. We are going to make it a new family tradition!

Party Planning Made Simple with Custom Invitations from Basic Invite

This is a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions shared are my own.

With the holidays in full swing, and Christmas behind us, I am already looking ahead on my calendar. I love to plan, actually, I sort of thrive on it. Making lists and calendars makes my heart happy. I love to be busy, and have a lot of fun planning special family trips or events that take place through out the year. One of the events that I am most looking forward to in 2017, is my daughter's first birthday! Baby S is just shy of 9 months old, and it's time for me to start making plans for her party.

Being the planner that I am, I already have a party theme chosen. We're going to have a butterfly theme with different shades of purple. I have even chosen the cake that I want for Baby S, and I can hardly wait to see her enjoy it! Since this is a 'big deal' kind of party, I am of course going to go all out. I have been scouring tons of stationery and first birthday invitations, and have found some gorgeous designs at Basic Invite.

Party planning can be very stressful, especially when you're planning a themed event. There will be a lot of little details that I will have to take care of for S' first birthday, and I don't want to have to worry about the invitations. I need to use invitations that I can easily customize, and that will give me a lot of different options to choose from. That's why I love Basic Invite. They have so many gorgeous designs to choose from, and their online design tool is so easy to use!

All I had to do was find the design that I liked the most, and then click on it to begin editing it, and customizing it to my needs. I love that many of the designs allow you to upload personal photos! I definitely want a picture of Baby S on the invitation to her first birthday party. Basic Invite is actually one of the few websites that allows its customers unlimited color options with instant online previews! Talk about instant gratification! Change the colors over and over again until you see the perfect design for you! I love being able to design the invite online, and then see it instantly.

Want to see it before you order it? No problem! Basic Invite allows customers to order a sample of their invitation, card, etc., so they can see exactly how it will look printed, before they place their final order. Tired of blending in with the rest by using plain Jane white envelopes? No worries- Basic Invite is just as colorful when it comes to envelopes. They have over 40 envelope color options to choose from! Make your invites stand out, before they're even opened. Plus- their envelopes will save you time... they're all peel and stick, making sealing envelopes quick and easy.

We also have some family graduations that will be happening just down the road. I can't wait to share about Basic Invite's graduation announcements with my family members. We're going to be having lots of wonderful things to celebrate in 2017, and I am so excited to get those parties started with invitations from Basic Invite!

A New Year...It's almost here! #happynewyear

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.  Are you ready for a New Year?  I don't usually do a lot for New Year's Eve.  This year, my brother, sister in law, nephew and niece are going to be in town for the weekend.  We are really looking forward to spending time with them.  We don't have any plans but I am sure we will find something fun to do.  My brother never makes it to midnight but I'm sure the rest of us will watch the ball drop and probably head straight to bed after that.  We will eat our New Year's meal the next day.  Do you eat greens and black eyed peas?  I don't do the greens and can remember my grandmother always telling me I would not have the green money since I didn't eat greens.  I guess she was right...haha!  What do you guys do for New Year's?  Any fun traditions?  I'd love to hear about them!

Happy New Year!! Enjoy and be safe!

Merry Christmas to All!

Image may contain: christmas tree, plant and indoor

Merry Christmas! Hopefully, you're with your love ones today, as I will be with mine. We're waking up bright and early, though we are still tired from our Christmas Eve. We spent the evening with friends and family at church and then headed home to tuck little ones into bed. Hubby and I played Santa, and tried to go to sleep, though hubby always has a hard time falling asleep on Christmas Eve, because he is so excited for Christmas.

I have been looking forward to Christmas morning for the past few weeks. They have been tough weeks for my family, after losing my Gram so suddenly on Dec. 2nd. I so badly want to see her sitting among us at my parent's house on Christmas Day, wearing her poinsettia sweatshirt, and smiling at the laughter of her great grandchildren. I am thankful for wonderful memories.

Now that I have children on my own, I look forward to seeing their excitement on Christmas morning. I love hearing my son recite the Christmas story, and then taking turns opening gifts, sitting around our perfect Christmas tree. Then, we head over to my in-law's and have a second Christmas with them, and enjoy brunch. I love being with them. Later in the afternoon, we head to my mom and dad's, and open gifts and enjoy Christmas dinner. Sometimes some of our friends stop by to visit, too.

Christmas for our family is all about celebrating the greatest gift- when love came down to live among us, and eventually save us. May Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace be at the center of your Christmas, and may you enjoy your time spent with family and friends!

Merry Christmas!

New TROLLHUNTERS DIY Battle Armor & Sword

From the limitless imagination of acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes a tale of two worlds set to collide in the epic saga DreamWorks Trollhunters, which follows ordinary teenager Jim Lake Jr. who inadvertently discovers an extraordinary secret civilization of mighty trolls beneath his small town of Arcadia. In celebration of this must-see series coming to Netflix on Friday, December 23rd, DreamWorks Animation Television and Netflix have released a fun featurette!

Contrasting Rap vs Hip Hop music – Here’s what you should know

Image result for listening to music

If you pick any of the weekly music charts from anywhere in the world, one thing that you’ll notice is the inclusion of rap songs and hip-hop chartbusters. With this, you cannot rule out the fact, that both the music genres have a large fan base all over the world. For many fans, rap and hip-hop have become the meaning of their lives, where it perfectly help them to represent the ups and downs of their lives.

The distinctions in the rap vs hip hop music cannot be characterized easily. As a rule, many people are probably going to concur that rap is progressively a style of music which appears like a conversation, whereas hip-hop, on the other hand, is more like a cultural phenomenon which incorporates the styles of the era. Each of these classifications of music has possessed the capacity to set up a critical effect on the general public and prominent media. Beginning in the late 70s, the rap music scene initially settled itself in New York City, where it impacted the people from the African-American community. By the late 90s, its social impacts began to get more acknowledged and turned out to be more far reaching through media influences. Not to forget the ever-expanding predominance of jump in rap and hip hop records sales.

When all is said in done, it frequently concurs that there are three major contrasting points between the two genres of music classes, which identifies with the essence of its community, its melodic elements, and its way of life. It is these angles that are regularly used in isolating rap from hip-hop music scene and some other prominent type of music. The impact of the hip-hop and rap music, right from political issues to advertisements, has fundamentally affected numerous areas in our regular day to day life.

As to its melodic elements, hip-hop is frequently referred to as having a more rhythm and blues, which for the most part has a more fantastic groove, and gets easily connected to wide range of audience. In connection to rap, it has more of a hardcore appeal, where the lyrics relate to the audience. The lyrical part imparts the pity, happiness, and successes of the society. If you take a step back and see, the issues included in rap songs have changed considerably. Where the rappers in the 80s regularly concentrated on social issues, which were normally not mainstream in the media; we have the rappers of the 90’s who were more focused on the pursuit of happiness. Today, the rap scene observes the issues identifying the connections with political powers and corporate greed. What's more, in connection to visual treat, many would go with black and white rap videos than the peppy colourful hip-hop ones.

Both of these music scenes are well known in the music business. In general, the rap artists are frequently observed to be predominately male, though, in the hip-hop music scene, the artists are regularly observed to be a blend of male and female. Also, in the rap music scenario, the majority of the artists are solo performers, unlike the hip-hop music, where you can find duos, trios and groups performing on the song.

Last Minute DIY Christmas Ornament Gift Idea:

The "Ruby Cube" is going to make a great
present for the grandparents this year!

Is everyone done with their Christmas gift shopping for this year? If not, you may be feeling the pressure with only today and tomorrow left as shopping days! However, I am here to offer a somewhat easy DIY gift idea that I think anyone would love to receive!

We are new parents this year and so Christmas presents were not at the top of the expense list in the end of year budget... Therefore, I decided to get a little crafty and make some memory ornaments that everyone will love! I thought this would be perfect, because in my family, we have always had more of a memory tree than a traditional Christmas tree! We hung baby shoes, old sports medals, ornaments we made as kids with fruit loops (some of which now appear to have been eaten off...), and even things like old eye glasses! So I headed to Hobby Lobby and grabbed some inexpensive items, had a few pictures developed and spent an afternoon crafting ornaments for all the new grandparents and some other family members as well while the baby napped!

Once I had all of my supplies, it only took me a couple of hours to put together some "Ruby Cubes" for the grandparents, some birch wood remnant family ornaments for other family members, and a set of yearly cubes for my husband that feature pictures from each of the 3 years we have been married! I also used my extra supplies to make an ornament for each of our puppies!

Take a look at how these super cute, easy to make ornaments came together-

We also made some Jones Family Ornaments
 for loved ones this year!

Supplies from the craft store include Mod Podge (I used the matte finish), wooden shapes (I used the birch cut outs and cubes pictured), screw eyes, card stock, and ribbon for hanging.

The most time consuming part of making these ornaments was figuring out how to get the pictures in a small enough dimension to fit on the ornaments... Lucky for you I figured this out! Using my smart phone and an app called pic collage, I was able to place 4 pictures in a grid with no border.  I then sent the collage over to Walgreens for 1 hour photo service and had them printed in their 4"x 4" size. Then I used an exacto knife and voila! Perfectly cropped 2"x 2" photos for your ornaments!

"Christmasy" Card Stock booklet

Packs of 4 Wooden Cubes at craft store

Birch Cutout bought from craft store.

Matte finish mod podge

Sample of photo collage created using
smart phone app

Screw Eyes for hanging attaching
 ribbon to hang ornaments.

Once you have all of your supplies collected, it's time to get creative! I cut out my pictures and cut the Card Stock into shapes that would fit the sides of the ornaments. Using an exacto knife allowed me to make precise cuts and even trim along the edges after I had attached the photo to the ornament.  Using Mod Podge and an old paint brush, I brushed a thin coat onto the ornament and adhered the photo. I then brushed a few coats on top of the photo to seal it to the ornament and to add a textured finish.  I used the card stock to decorate the tops and bottoms of my cube ornaments and as back grounds for my family ornaments. The card stock was adhered to the ornaments in the same fashion using the mod podge.  After all the sides were decorated, I simply screwed the screw eyes into the tops of the ornaments and added a thin neutral ribbon for hanging on the trees!

This project allows for all kinds of personalizing and creativity! You can really make it the perfect gift for anyone on your list!

Here's how some of my ornaments turned out-

So if you are frantically trying to come up with last minute gift ideas, don't panic! Just put on your creative cap, run out to the craft store and whip up some personal gifts that your loved ones will cherish!

Happy crafting and Merry Christmas!

~Ashley~
